The Piedmont Athens Regional and Athens Banner-Herald's inaugural 'Athlete of the Week' poll for the 2026-27 academic year is now open for voting! This exciting initiative aims to recognize the exceptional talent and achievements of student-athletes from the 18 schools within the region's coverage area. Each week, a select group of these outstanding athletes will be nominated based on their outstanding in-game performances from the previous week. Coaches are encouraged to submit nominations, and individuals can also contribute by emailing stidwell@gannett.com with the player's details and reasons for their nomination. The poll will be open until Sunday, August 23rd, at 5 p.m., with new polls commencing every Monday. Once a player is crowned 'Athlete of the Week', they are ineligible for further nominations. This week's nominees are a testament to the region's athletic prowess, showcasing a diverse range of sports and impressive individual performances.
Football: Reid Jackson, Bethlehem Christian
Reid Jackson, a sophomore running back, showcased his prowess with 18 carries for 106 yards and a touchdown against Calvary Christian. His performance highlights the potential of young talent in the region's football scene.
Softball: Audry Torres, Bethlehem Christian
