SkyTrain Weekend Maintenance: What You Need to Know (2026)

The FIFA World Cup may be over, but the impact on Vancouver's transit system is far from finished. As the city begins to return to normal, TransLink has announced that weekend SkyTrain services will be disrupted due to essential maintenance work on the Expo Line.

This maintenance, scheduled to begin on July 25th, will significantly impact early Saturday and Sunday mornings, as well as late-night Sundays, through the fall. The work involves upgrading the rail assembly that powers the SkyTrain's linear induction motors on the Expo Line, a crucial step in ensuring the system's optimal operation and accommodating future expansion and increased ridership.

TransLink is urging commuters to plan ahead, allowing up to 20 minutes of extra travel time during the maintenance periods. The maintenance will not affect services on the Canada Line or Millennium Line, but specific Expo Line stations will be impacted, as detailed on the Transit Alerts.

This is a critical undertaking for the long-term sustainability of the SkyTrain system. The LIM Rail Replacement program, which will replace around 60,000 meters of LIM rail along the 30-kilometer Expo Line, is designed to support the system's future needs. By matching the rail assembly on the Expo Line to that of the Millennium Line, TransLink aims to enhance the efficiency and reliability of the entire SkyTrain network.

However, this maintenance comes at a cost for commuters. The disruption to weekend services is a necessary evil in the pursuit of a more robust and efficient transit system. While it may cause inconvenience in the short term, the long-term benefits are clear. The question remains: how will this impact the daily lives of Vancouverites, and what can be done to minimize the disruption during this critical maintenance period?
